I used to wonder whether God really wanted to be involved in my life. I knew that He loved me so much that He’d sent His Son Jesus to come to earth and die in my place for my sins (John 3:16). But did the everyday events of my life interest Him enough to be involved with me at my most basic level?
Did He care about what I thought or how I felt on any given day? Or since He’d dealt with my sin problem, was it now just up to me to stay out of trouble? I wasn’t sure.
As I looked to the Bible for answers, I learned that God wanted to be involved in my life as much as I would allow Him to be. He wasn’t interested in being my “get out of hell” card. He was my heavenly Father, not just my sponsor into eternity. He was there from my beginning and would be with me to the end, period. That was such a huge relief to me.
The best part is that this isn’t some exclusive arrangement I have with God that’s not available to you. God doesn’t play favorites (Acts 10:34). He wants to be intimately involved in your life too. As a loving Father should, God watches over you and wants to help you. But He’s not watching over you like a parole officer.
Think about that for a second. The God of Creation is interested in the highs and lows of your life—and not just for informational purposes. He’s there to lend a helping hand and to be the shoulder you cry on.
So how detailed is God about you and me? Jesus explained this in Matthew 10:29–30: “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered” (NIV).
The first time I read that Scripture, I was amazed. God has taken a full inventory of me; He’s even counted every hair on my head! (As I get older, that count must be getting easier…my hair inventory is slowly reducing in number.)
In Psalm 139, David speaks of how intricately involved God was in his formation. In this passage, we see that God doesn’t sit on a throne in some distant place, observing with a passing interest. In verse 13, David says, “You created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.” Verses 16 through 18 read, “Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand” (NIV).
Read those verses a few times and let them sink in. God’s thoughts for you outnumber the grains of sand! That is mind boggling. Those innumerable thoughts began when He first thought of you. As He pondered your life, He became enthralled with you and was moved to knit you together in your mother’s womb. You aren’t an afterthought!
Psalm 139 paints a beautiful picture of God’s detailed involvement in all the facets of who you are to Him. God didn’t mass produce you; you are His unique creation. And God Almighty loves and values you so much that He gave a part of Himself, in the person of His Son, Jesus, so that God your Father could have an intimate relationship with you.
Never doubt your worth to Him. And don’t forget it either.
